By far the best lakeside walk I have walked is in
Montreux. I highly recommend it.
You can start from the Montreux rail / train station
and go right until Château de Chillon. There are
beautiful views along the way – flowers, water,
snow clad peaks, boats, a sculpture and finally the
castle! While coming back to rail station you can take
a bus as well. Some of my favourite pictures are taken
during this walk. I have included some in this page.
I have done this walk twice in last 5 years but would
like visit again.
Château de Chillon +41 21 966 89 10 is Open every
day until 6pm. It is a historic castle on a small island
in Lake Geneva only a few meters from the shore. It
was built originally to allow the occupants to extract
a toll from people and goods passing between Italy and
the rest of Europe on the road north from the St. Bernard
pass.
The roadway here is wedged between the lake and the
cliffs, so there was no way to get around Chillon. The
Castle is more famous in modern times for having inspired
Lord Byron's poem, The Prisoner of Chillon, based on
the true story of François Bonivard, a political
prisoner from Geneva who was released in 1536.
