Interlaken name comes from ‘In between lakes’
– namely Lake Brienz and Lake Thun.
They call it Thunersee – See being lake in German.
So Lake Brienz becomes Brienzersee.

Interlaken switzerland Photo
In my opinion, it is THE place to make a base location
to explore key visitor attractions in Switzerland. Key
being its location – almost in the center of all
key swiss destinations like Lake Thun, Lake Brienz,
Jungfraugh, Muren, Wengen, Bernese Oberland, Lausanne,
Zermatt, Shilthorn, Berne, Zurich, Lucerne and so on.
Keep at least 3 days to explore this fantastic landscape
which includes snow mountains, Lakes, boats, scenic
railways, waterfalls. It is a very picturesque place
so have your camera handy. You can take the typical
‘holiday postcard’ like photos in this region.
It is at the foot the famous trio of peaks, the Eiger,
the Mönch and the Jungfrau.
You can explore various attractions near Interlaken
like Jungfraujoch Top of Europe-The highest railway
station in Europe, Schilthorn-Piz Gloria, Beatenberg-Niederhorn
for fine panoramic views extend from the Lakes of Thun
and Brienz to the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau,
The St. Beatus Caves, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
One more interesting place id Harder Kulm which offers
fine views of the Bernese Oberland "capital"
(between the Lakes of Brienz and Thun) as well as the
entire Jungfrau Region. Particularly popular with children
are the trip to the top by funicular and the Alpine
wildlife park at the valley station, near Interlaken
Ost railway station.
The dock from where you can catch ferries is just
behind the Interlaken West Rail station. It would be
worth buying the swiss pass since it’s valid on
most modes of transport including rail, bus and boats.
During my first visit to Interlaken, we stayed at
a YHA hostel which was pretty good and cheap. During
my second visit, I opted for a self catering apartment
which is about 5 to 10 minutes walk from the rail station.
There are good hotels as well if you prefer.
